Shakira, Madonna, BTS, and Justin Bieber performed in the first-ever musical show during the halftime of the World Cup final. The spectacle at MetLife Stadium in New York was complemented by classical orchestras, and the usual break between halves was extended to nearly half an hour. Euronews reports on this.
Which stars performed during the halftime of the World Cup 2026 final in New York
The main performer of the show was Shakira. The Colombian singer performed the official anthem of the World Cup, «Dai Dai». Also appearing on stage were Madonna, members of the South Korean group BTS, and Justin Bieber.
The Canadian singer specifically changed the lyrics of the song «Everything Hallelujah», adding a line about the World Cup. The show was coordinated by Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin.
Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel joined the musical part. He performed with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra.
The appearance of classical musicians was an atypical decision for a show of this format. FIFA combined pop music, orchestral performance, and a grand stage production right on the football field.
Why the halftime of the World Cup 2026 final lasted nearly 30 minutes
Typically, the break between halves of a football match lasts 15 minutes. During the final between Spain and Argentina, it was extended nearly twice as long due to the setup and dismantling of the stage, as well as the preparation of the pitch for the continuation of the game.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB) does not recommend such long breaks. However, the special regulations for the World Cup 2026 allowed FIFA to extend the interval for the first-ever Super Bowl-style show.
The organizers also utilized the concert for FIFA and Global Citizen's charity campaign. The funds raised will be directed towards educational projects for children in various countries.
The show became part of FIFA's new approach to the final of the World Cup. The main match of the tournament was transformed into a grand sports-entertainment event aimed not only at football fans but also at a broader audience.
It is worth noting that the primary goal of the show was to raise 100 million dollars for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which will help to provide children in various countries with access to quality education and opportunities to engage in football.
