Air Quality in Kyiv at the Beginning of 2026: Low Pollution Levels and Normal Radiation Background

Чисте повітря в Києві на початку 2026 року: Низькі показники забруднення та стабільний радіаційний рівень.

Air Pollution Status in Kyiv at the Beginning of 2026

As of January 1, 2026, the level of air pollution in Kyiv is low, and the radiation background is normal. According to monitoring data, various air quality indices have been recorded in the capital of Ukraine depending on the measurement location at the beginning of the new year.

Air Quality Indices in Different Districts

  • Turiivska St., 28: the overall air quality index is 15, indicating very low pollution levels. The concentration of major pollutants at this location is as follows:

    • TSP - 11.7 µg/m3
    • NO2 - 25.8 µg/m3
    • CO - 284.4 µg/m3
    • O3 - 34.4 µg/m3
    • NO - 7.3 µg/m3

These indicators are significantly lower than the maximum allowable concentrations (MAC), which are 500 µg/m3 for TSP, 200 µg/m3 for NO2, 5000 µg/m3 for CO, 160 µg/m3 for O3, and 400 µg/m3 for NO.

  • Brest Avenue, 97: the overall air quality index is 53, indicating a moderate level of pollution. The concentration of pollutants at this location is as follows:

    • TSP - 7.4 µg/m3
    • NO2 - 12.3 µg/m3
    • SO2 - 133.1 µg/m3
    • CO - 285.3 µg/m3
    • O3 - 62.9 µg/m3
    • NO - 0.7 µg/m3

These indicators also remain within acceptable limits.

  • Kytayivska St., 22: the overall air quality index is 28, indicating a low level of pollution. The concentration of pollutants in the air here is:

    • TSP - 15 µg/m3
    • NO2 - 8.3 µg/m3
    • SO2 - 20.2 µg/m3
    • CO - 353.8 µg/m3
    • O3 - 61.8 µg/m3
    • benzene - 0.1 µg/m3
    • NO - 0.5 µg/m3

As in the previous locations, these indicators are also below the established maximum allowable concentrations.

The radiation background in Kyiv at the beginning of 2026 is 0.123 µSv/h, which is also within the norm. Thus, at the beginning of the year, there is a positive trend regarding air quality in the capital, which is an important indicator for public health.

Overall, the improvement in air quality in Kyiv may be the result of efforts by local authorities to reduce emissions of pollutants and to implement ecological initiatives. Low levels of air pollution are essential for the health of the city's residents, which may contribute to an improved quality of life. However, it is important to continue monitoring and taking measures to maintain this positive trend in the future.
