Activists Petition Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science
A group of activists has formally requested that Ukraine's Ministry of Education and Science review the work of philologist and school textbook author Oleksandr Avramenko. This call for action follows public debate concerning his residence abroad during the country's period of martial law. The activists specifically note that Avramenko spent a considerable amount of time in Spain, a situation that has caused significant public concern. In times of national crisis, the conduct of influential figures in education is often scrutinized for its symbolic weight.
The request to the Ministry was prompted by a letter from the investigative journalism agency 'Power of Ukraine'. In this letter, the activists expressed apprehension about how Avramenko's extended stay overseas might reflect on his role as a textbook author and his influence on youth. They emphasized that 'a textbook author is not merely a language specialist. This person is a bearer of values and an example—someone children look to not only for words but also for life choices, a sense of responsibility, and the willingness to stand with their nation during its most difficult times.'
A Question of Moral Responsibility
The letter further states that after November 2024, Oleksandr Avramenko's activity on social media decreased significantly. In the summer of 2024, he became the center of a scandal after posting a photo from a beach, with his profile's geolocation indicating Spain. This incident raised serious questions about his accountability as a public figure. Although in September 2024 Avramenko denied reports of having left the country, the activists maintain that society has a right to question the boundaries of responsibility and the moral fitness required for such a public role.
We are not assuming the functions of a court or replacing law enforcement agencies. But as a society, we have every right to ask questions.

On February 6, 2025, Oleksandr Avramenko returned to social media with a new photo. However, questions regarding his conduct and moral stance continue to be relevant for the public.
This situation underscores the critical importance of moral responsibility for public figures, especially during national crises. The activists stress the necessity of evaluating Avramenko's actions, given that his role within Ukraine's educational system implies adherence to specific ethical standards. The Ministry of Education and Science's response to this request could set an important precedent for establishing behavioral norms for educators and other public figures under the challenging conditions currently facing Ukraine.
