Zarina Zabrisky: A Filmmaker Documenting Life in Kherson

Zarina Zabrisky, an American journalist, documentary filmmaker, and author, has been living and working in Kherson for an extended period. She continues to capture the impact of Russian attacks on the city and shares the stories of its residents enduring bombardments. Recently, she was appointed ambassador of the 34th Separate Marine Brigade 'Borysfen' stationed in Kherson, marking a significant milestone in her ongoing collaboration with the Ukrainian military.

With Ukrainian roots but having spent most of her life in the United States, Zabrisky is dedicated to chronicling key developments in Kherson. She documented humanitarian aid deliveries via drones to the occupied town of Oleshky and produced a documentary titled 'Kherson. Safari on People,' which was featured at the Munich Security Conference, a major international event focused on global security.

According to Yevhen Voronetskyi, press officer for the 34th Marine Brigade 'Borysfen,' the partnership with Zabrisky has been long-standing. She has conducted numerous interviews with brigade fighters, visited their frontline positions, and continues to reside in Kherson.

“We even gave her the call sign ‘California’ and joke that no matter where she is or whom she interviews, she always highlights the defense efforts of the 34th Separate Marine Brigade 'Borysfen.' While she interacts with various units, it seems she’s formed the strongest bond with us. That’s why we decided Zarina should officially be our ambassador.”

The Crucial Role of Documentation

It’s important to recall that October 27 marked the first day of a ceasefire in Kherson. Tragically, on the same day, Zabrisky’s colleague Volodymyr Obertas was killed by a landmine explosion. Zabrisky remains one of the few foreign journalists reporting on Russian war crimes in Kherson. She is currently completing her second documentary about Kherson and working on a third focused on the soldiers of the 34th Marine Brigade 'Borysfen.' The brigade notes, “Our collaboration has been ongoing for a long time. Zarina is finalizing her second film about Kherson and is developing a third that highlights those defending the city.”

Zabrisky’s work with the 34th Marine Brigade underlines the vital importance of frontline documentation and the media’s role in shaping international understanding of the conflict in Ukraine. Through her films and reports, she not only raises global awareness about the realities of war but also amplifies the voices of civilians caught in the crossfire. Her efforts contribute significantly to influencing public opinion and garnering support for Ukraine worldwide.
