Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Sets New Global Flight Endurance Benchmark

The U.S. Army has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by flying a battery-powered drone for more than eight hours, specifically 8 hours, 41 minutes, and 43 seconds. During this record-breaking flight, the drone covered around 300 miles (over 450 kilometers). This feat was accomplished during the Game of Drones event held from July 15 to 17 at Edwards Air Force Base in California, surpassing the previous endurance record by nearly 50 minutes.

Rapid Design and Manufacturing Process Behind the Drone

What makes this achievement particularly remarkable is the speed at which the drone was developed and produced. The design was finalized in under ten minutes using computer-aided prompts, and the drone was manufactured within 24 hours on a mobile production line utilizing commercial 3D printers. A compact team of three assembled the drone on-site, incorporating two brushless DC motors sourced from the Army’s Tobikhan warehouse in Pennsylvania.

John Strzelec, head of AMC’s advanced small UAV manufacturing division, commented, "This achievement marks a significant milestone for AMC, especially as we just inaugurated our new brushless motor production line."

He further emphasized, "The Game of Drones event showcased the powerful synergy possible when industry and government collaborate creatively. It perfectly reflects the Army’s goal to empower industry partnerships, enabling the military to leverage cutting-edge innovations and deep technical expertise."

In addition to this breakthrough, Saab unveiled its roadmap for the Autonomous Collaborative Platform (ACP) program, aiming to develop a stealthy supersonic fighter drone. This UAV is expected to enter service with the Swedish Air Force and other clients during the 2030s. Saab is also advancing two technology demonstrators and presented a full-scale prototype of the operational drone.

This new endurance record highlights significant advances in unmanned technology with potential applications spanning both defense and civilian sectors. The emphasis on rapid design and production reflects the growing importance of innovation in meeting military demands and fostering government-industry collaboration.
