Ukraine’s Antimonopoly Committee Orders Gas Stations to Cut Fuel Prices Within 10 Days

Антимонопольний комітет України зобов'язав автозаправні станції знизити ціни на паливо протягом десяти днів.

AMCU Launches Probe into Fuel Pricing

Ukraine’s Antimonopoly Committee (AMCU) has initiated an investigation into fuel prices at the country’s largest gas stations. Station owners have been given a 10-day deadline to adjust gasoline and diesel prices to justifiable levels. This action follows the discovery of discrepancies between retail prices and changes in wholesale costs and global benchmarks, sparking public concern.

The AMCU stated that gas station networks must provide calculations proving that their fuel prices are based on actual expenses rather than a desire for excessive profits. Consequently, the committee issued recommendations to major fuel retailers, urging them to set and adjust retail prices for gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas in line with objective economic factors. These factors include:

  • market fluctuations in procurement costs;
  • compliance with economic competition laws.

The rise in petroleum product prices occurred amid a sharp increase in global oil prices, shifts in EU market quotations for oil products, challenges in securing sufficient diesel imports, as well as currency exchange rate hikes and rising logistics expenses.

“Given the public interest in rising fuel prices, in addition to conducting an investigation, the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine has been and continues to monitor the markets for gasoline, diesel, and liquefied gas to ensure economic competition,” the AMCU noted.

AMCU Chairman Pavlo Kyrylenko reported that the fuel crisis has been stabilized, preventing a shortage of petroleum products. These measures are crucial for maintaining stability in Ukraine’s fuel market. As a result, the committee continues its efforts to ensure fair pricing and foster economic competition in this sector.

This AMCU investigation reflects growing societal unease over fuel pricing policies, which, despite global market shifts, can negatively impact the economy and consumer welfare. The committee’s actions could represent a significant step toward stabilizing the pricing situation by promoting greater transparency in how fuel costs are determined. Ultimately, the probe’s outcomes are expected not only to improve market conditions but also to support healthy competition among gas station operators.

In light of the ongoing scrutiny of fuel pricing, it's important to understand the broader implications of the AMCU's actions. This investigation is not only a response to public outcry but also a part of a larger effort to ensure fair market dynamics.
