Analyst on 2026: War in Ukraine, Trump and Global Changes

As of mid-January 2026, the full-scale war of Russia against Ukraine has lasted for 1418 days. The geopolitical situation at the beginning of the year was discussed by analyst Ruslan Bezyayev, focusing on developments in Ukraine and the global initiatives of the U.S. administration. Against the backdrop of combined Russian strikes on Ukraine, including attacks by 'Oreshnik' and on the energy system, internal political struggles in Kyiv are escalating around issues of heat and electricity supply.

Global Initiatives of the U.S. Administration

The international picture, according to the analyst, demonstrates Washington's desire to restore its role as a hegemon. U.S. President Donald Trump threatens to resolve the issue of Greenland 'by any means', stating:

'We don’t want Russia or China to come to Greenland because if we don’t take Greenland, you will have Russia and China as our neighbors.' Donald Trump

His administration is also planning to sharply increase the military budget with an emphasis on space programs, AI and laser weapons, while simultaneously applying pressure on a number of Latin American countries. Against this backdrop, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has stated his willingness to consider a proposal to create a free economic zone in Donbas in case of a ceasefire, calling this format 'difficult, but now fair.'
