Anastasiia Saturova’s Performance at the Dakar Youth Olympics

At the 4th Summer Youth Olympic Games held in Dakar, Anastasiia Saturova secured 17th place in the road cycling group race with a finishing time of 1:31:19. The Ukrainian cyclist arrived in Dakar having come from much cooler conditions, with temperatures around six degrees Celsius back home. She shared her reflections on the race and outlined her plans for the upcoming time trial event.

Race Conditions and Strategy

Describing the race environment, Anastasiia commented:

"During the first four laps, the heat was manageable. My coaches provided ice packs and cold water bottles, which helped. However, as the race progressed, the sun’s intensity on my back became overwhelming. The last two laps were especially tough, with the heat really taking its toll—quite challenging considering I came from a much cooler climate in Ukraine." - Anastasiia Saturova

Regarding her race tactics, she explained, "I aimed to maintain the best position possible for myself—conserving energy when I could and pushing through when necessary." Despite her effort, Anastasiia acknowledged that her result fell short of her expectations: "This isn’t the outcome I was hoping for, and I always strive for better. I’ll keep working to improve." Reflecting on the race’s end, she added, "I believe I could have achieved a stronger finish if I had positioned myself better before the final sprint."

Anastasiia’s next competition is scheduled for November 10, when she will compete in the time trial event.

The result highlights the challenges faced by athletes competing far from home, especially when adjusting to drastically different weather conditions. The intense heat in Dakar contrasted sharply with the mild temperatures she was accustomed to, likely impacting her performance. Her determination to refine her skills and improve outcomes signals a promising commitment to future success in international cycling events.

In addition to Anastasiia's performance, her teammate Dmytro Starovoitov is also competing at the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, showcasing the talents of Ukrainian athletes on an international stage. His participation, scheduled for November 8-10, adds to the excitement surrounding the event and highlights the ongoing efforts of Ukraine's young sports stars.
