Thunder: a new autonomous aerial vehicle enters the scene
On July 21 at 6:01 PM, defense tech firm Anduril Industries introduced the Thunder, an autonomous military aircraft built for coordinated flights with manned helicopters. This tiltrotor drone is engineered to enhance battlefield effectiveness by operating in sync with piloted rotorcraft. Its design enables vertical takeoff and landing, then transitions to wing-borne flight for longer missions.
Inside the Thunder's capabilities
Developed in partnership with Archer Aviation, the Thunder leverages commercial electric vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) technology. It features a hybrid-electric propulsion system and can adjust rotor speed during cruise flight. The aircraft can self-deploy over long distances, reaching a top speed of roughly 515 km/h at low altitudes, with an operational range of up to 1,480 km.
The Thunder uses interchangeable payload bays, making it adaptable to various combat roles. One configuration can carry:
- up to ten AGM-114 Hellfire guided missiles
- AGM-179 JAGM missiles
- Barracuda-100M cruise missiles
An alternative setup accommodates sixteen Altius-600 missiles. Operators can also equip the Thunder with seventy-six 70 mm rockets. Anduril estimates that pairing three Thunder aircraft with each AH-64 Apache would triple a brigade's available munitions.
The drone runs on Anduril's Lattice software platform. The company expects the Thunder to make its maiden flight in 2027.
