Anesthesiologist in Chernihiv Faces Charges After Patient Dies Following Surgery

Tragedy in Chernihiv

An anesthesiologist at a private clinic in Chernihiv has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 140 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The case follows the death of a 42-year-old female patient who never regained consciousness after undergoing a cosmetic procedure in mid-February 2026. Despite being aware of the woman's medical contraindications, the doctor administered general anesthesia using multiple drugs. After the operation, he assessed her condition as stable but left her unattended.

Nine days later, the patient was rushed by ambulance to the regional hospital, where she tragically died without ever waking up. A pre-trial investigation is ongoing. Under Article 140, the penalty may include restriction or imprisonment for up to two years, as well as a ban from holding certain positions for up to five years.

Growing Concern Over Medical Negligence

This incident is not isolated. In January 2026, another plastic surgeon from a private clinic in Kyiv was taken to court following the death of a 28-year-old patient. These cases highlight a troubling pattern of medical professionals failing to meet their professional responsibilities.

It is important to note that, under Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This situation underscores the critical need for medical staff to act responsibly, especially when administering anesthesia—a high-risk component of any surgery. The rising number of such negligence cases has sparked public concern and calls for stricter oversight of healthcare services to ensure patient safety. Investigations into these incidents may drive reforms in the medical field, helping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

This tragic case in Chernihiv is reminiscent of another recent incident where a 34-year-old woman died following cosmetic surgery in Mykolaiv. Such events raise serious questions about the oversight of medical practices in Ukraine and the urgent need for reforms to protect patients from negligence during procedures that carry inherent risks.
