Meteorologist Challenges Use of 'Abnormal Frosts' to Describe Ukraine's Cold Snap

Метеоролог ставить під сумнів вживання терміна незвичайні морози для характеристики холодної погоди в Україні.

Meteorologist Disputes Label of 'Abnormal Frosts' in Ukraine

Natalia Ptukha, a forecaster at the Ukrhydrometcenter, has stated that the term 'abnormal frosts' lacks scientific foundation. She emphasized that weather events are only considered abnormal if they have never been recorded in the entire history of observations. While the recent cold spell may be unusual in its duration for the last decade, labeling it as abnormal for the region is incorrect. This clarification is important for public understanding of weather terminology, especially during periods of severe conditions.

Ukraine has no regulatory documents that define the concept of 'abnormality.' For instance, the absolute minimum temperature recorded in Kyiv on January 19 was -23°C in 1942, while the absolute maximum for the same date was +10°C in 2023. Forecasts indicate the peak of the cold will bring nighttime temperatures down to -25°C. Additionally, dangerous black ice is expected to persist on roadways.

"Therefore, there is currently no basis to speak of anomalies," Natalia Ptukha noted.

Meteorologists continue to monitor the weather conditions, but the term 'abnormal frosts' does not accurately reflect the reality of temperature patterns in Ukraine.

The Importance of Precise Terminology

The situation with the frosts in Ukraine underscores the importance of accuracy in the terms used to describe weather conditions. In an era of climate change and extreme weather events, understanding the scientific basis of terminology can help prevent public misunderstandings and avoidable panic. Forecasters will keep monitoring the situation to allow for a swift response to any changes, particularly concerning road safety and energy resources.
