Sentencing of Lawyer Oleg Panasenko

The Appeals Chamber of the High Anti-Corruption Court confirmed on January 19, 2026, the conviction of lawyer Oleg Panasenko. He was found guilty of inciting a citizen to promise an unlawful bribe to a prosecutor from the Office of the Prosecutor General. Panasenko was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison, along with a three-year ban on practicing law. This ruling took immediate legal effect upon announcement.

Details of the Investigation

The case was investigated by Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO), following a citizen's complaint. During the pre-trial investigation, it was established that Panasenko persuaded a citizen to promise a $5,000 bribe to a prosecutor. The bribe was intended to influence the prosecutor's petition to the court to exempt the citizen from legal responsibility.

Moreover, Panasenko pushed for a contract with the citizen to conceal his criminal actions. He was convicted under parts 4 of Article 27 and 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The Appeals Chamber's decision can be appealed to the Supreme Court within three months through cassation proceedings.

This verdict marks a significant milestone in Ukraine's ongoing fight against corruption, highlighting the vigilance of anti-corruption authorities in addressing illicit conduct among legal professionals. It also underscores the gravity of bribery offenses, reinforcing public confidence in the justice system. Future developments will depend on whether the ruling is challenged at the Supreme Court, potentially influencing the legal profession's standards in Ukraine.
