Japan's Official Warning on 5G Security
The Japanese government has issued a formal alert to domestic companies, warning of potential technology leaks and breaches of confidential information stemming from the use of Huawei Technologies Co.'s 5G networks. This warning comes as Ukraine actively develops its 5G infrastructure, including a major telecom operator testing the technology in several cities. Following successful trials, that operator has received radio frequency spectrum from the Ukrainian government to further its 5G deployment.
Japanese firm Rakuten Group Inc. also participated in a tender for 5G business development in Ukraine but was unsuccessful. Official Japanese documents state that the expansion of Huawei's 5G network into Kyiv and other major cities poses a significant risk to Japan, Europe, and the United States. The Japanese government also expressed concern over the potential for Chinese technological products to enter markets via Turkish companies.
Support for Ukrainian Infrastructure
Separately, Japan, Europe, and the United States are considering expanding support for Ukraine's infrastructure, particularly its energy and transport systems. It is notable that Lviv became the first city in Ukraine to launch 5G technology, with a key advantage being data transmission speeds of approximately 500 Mbps per subscriber.
