Japan Commits 4 Billion Yen in Aid to Ukraine
Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced today the signing of a grant agreement with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for approximately 4 billion yen. This funding represents the next step in implementing agreements reached in December 2025 and will be allocated for humanitarian demining and medical assistance. This support comes as Ukraine continues to face immense challenges in securing its territory and caring for its wounded.
Allocation of the Grant Assistance
The grant aid will be used in two primary areas:
- Humanitarian demining
- Medical assistance
With mine and explosive injuries accounting for roughly 65% of all wounds, demining programs are critically important. The humanitarian demining component will fund the procurement of modern equipment and machinery, as well as mine safety training for the population. For medical assistance, the funds will be used to purchase equipment for the Main Medical Clinical Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which will improve the treatment and rehabilitation of the injured.
Previous support from JICA has already provided Ukraine with vital equipment, including mechanical demining vehicles, metal detectors, and specialized gear, enhancing the effectiveness of efforts in these fields.
This agreement underscores the continuation of international support for Ukraine in the crucial areas of safety and healthcare. Given the high number of mine-related injuries, demining remains a priority for preserving lives and public health. As a key partner, Japan demonstrates its commitment to aiding Ukraine's recovery and improving living conditions.
