Apple Is Designing New Gaming Controllers for iPhone

Apple is actively working on gaming controllers for the iPhone, potentially launching them under the Beats brand. Evidence of this project surfaced in the macOS 26.7 code, confirming ongoing development. The initiative has been underway for over a year, led by the Beats team, with key figures such as Mark Gurman commenting:

“The product design and concept are being driven by Beats leadership.”

Within the macOS 26.7 code, references to two hardware devices codenamed T6502 and T1057 were discovered. These controllers will feature dual joysticks, side buttons, and a D-pad, positioning them as competitive options in the gaming accessory market. Although built for the iPhone, the presence of their code in macOS highlights Apple's effort to integrate gaming experiences across its platforms.

Availability and Emerging Technologies

Currently, Apple offers third-party controllers from brands like Backbone and SteelSeries in its online store. The upcoming Beats controllers are expected to be a more affordable alternative, likely using less premium materials to appeal to a broader audience. iPhone users already have the option to connect MFi-compatible controllers as well as PlayStation DualShock and Xbox wireless controllers.

In addition to gaming hardware, Apple recently introduced Reference Image technology aimed at combating fake and AI-generated content. Debuting with the iPhone 18 Pro, this innovation involves a specialized main camera sensor that captures each pixel with a unique digital signature. The captured data is processed via secure cloud computing into a digital negative, which users can view in the Apple Photos app and compare with other images to detect alterations.

Apple’s move into branded gaming controllers and advanced imaging technology reflects its commitment to expanding its presence in mobile gaming and digital content authenticity. Introducing Beats-branded controllers could strengthen Apple’s foothold in the rapidly growing mobile gaming market, attracting new users. Meanwhile, the Reference Image system may enhance trust in digital media and bolster Apple’s reputation as a leader in both innovation and combating misinformation.

As Apple continues to innovate in the gaming space with its upcoming Beats-branded controllers, it is also making strides in enhancing image authenticity. The recently announced image verification technology for the iPhone 18 Pro introduces unique pixel signatures, providing users with an effective tool to combat fake content. This initiative reflects Apple's commitment to integrating advanced technologies across its devices, ensuring a secure and enjoyable user experience.
