Apple Updates App Store Policies to Protect Younger Users
On November 3, Apple announced major updates to its App Store guidelines, introducing an 18+ age restriction for apps featuring dating, romantic relationships, and AI companions with romantic or sexual content. These changes, effective from November 16, aim to shield children and minors from exposure to potentially harmful material.
New Developer Obligations
Under the revised rules, developers must apply new content tags to comply with these age limits. This mandate also applies to AI platforms like Character.AI and Replika, which enable users to create virtual conversational partners, including those with romantic themes. Notably, in 2025, the most popular AI companion apps have been downloaded 220 million times across the App Store and Google Play.
Additionally, Apple is introducing stricter disclosure requirements for apps that share users’ real-time locations. Developers will need to clearly indicate this feature in their app descriptions. In Brazil, apps offering family location sharing will be eligible to receive an official age rating from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, replacing the usual A16 rating.
These updates reflect Apple’s ongoing commitment to enhancing user safety, particularly for minors. The company has previously implemented age verification tools, expanded parental controls, and added safety features tailored for younger audiences. The new rules compel developers to uphold higher safety standards to better protect youth within digital environments.
Apple’s latest policy changes are expected to significantly affect the app market, especially sectors involving dating and AI interactions. The introduction of the 18+ age restriction and stricter content requirements may prompt developers to modify their products to meet these standards. This move highlights the growing responsibility tech companies bear in safeguarding young users online and could set a precedent for industry-wide practices.
As Apple strengthens its commitment to user safety, similar initiatives are being observed across the tech industry. For instance, Meta has also taken significant steps by removing over 33 million posts related to child exploitation through advanced AI safety measures. This indicates a broader trend towards enhancing online protection for vulnerable users.
