Possibility of Holding Elections in Ukraine

Head of the Servant of the People faction Davyd Arahamia announced the possibility of holding elections in Ukraine through online and offline voting. According to him, such elections could pose a challenge for internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Ukrainians living abroad. Arahamia emphasized that the elections will be complicated, and their organization will require significant financial investments.

The meeting of the working group dedicated to election issues took place on December 26. During the meeting, various aspects of election organization were discussed, including the possibility of using online voting. Arahamia noted that holding elections could cost at least 20 billion hryvnias, while the last presidential elections in 2019 cost about 2 billion hryvnias.

Challenges and Legitimacy of Elections

The politician also pointed out that low voter turnout could lead to negative consequences.

“If there is low turnout, it will give the enemy and other opponents an argument that these elections may be deemed illegitimate or minimally legitimate,” Arahamia emphasized.
In addition, he explained the procedure by which military personnel can become candidates in elections: “If a military person wants to be a candidate, they write a leave application to their commander.”

Thus, the issue of holding elections in Ukraine, particularly in the context of online voting and challenges for IDPs, remains relevant and requires further discussion and the development of effective mechanisms. In the context of military aggression and an unstable situation in the country, it is important to ensure the legitimacy of elections, which can have a significant impact on the political situation and citizens' trust in government institutions.
