Arda Turan’s Remarks on Match Preparation

Shakhtar Donetsk head coach Arda Turan has shared his thoughts on the team’s preparations for the second leg of the UEFA Europa Conference League semifinal against Crystal Palace. The first match ended in a 3-1 loss for Shakhtar, making their path to the final significantly harder. The return leg is scheduled for May 7 at Crystal Palace’s home ground, kicking off at 10:00 PM Kyiv time.

Turan acknowledged the difficulty ahead:

“We face a tough game. It will be very hard to reach the final from the position we’re in after the first match.”
He also stressed that Shakhtar learned a valuable lesson from the opener: “We received a very good lesson in that game.” Despite the challenging circumstances, Turan remains confident in his squad: “We are a team that will be playing in the Champions League in two or three months, and we have a dream of reaching the UEFA Europa Conference League final—we are not giving up on that dream.”

First Match Analysis and Motivation

The coach noted that Shakhtar held 70 percent possession in the first leg, but Crystal Palace’s well-defined system allowed them to capitalize on Shakhtar’s mistakes. Turan emphasized:

“Crystal Palace played at their level and were always ready to take advantage of any opportunity.”
He also reflected on what he learned from the opponent, saying: “After the first match, I believe I learned a lot from the opponent. To use chess terminology, they put us in checkmate.”

Discussing team motivation, Turan remarked: “I told the players: if you can fight, you can achieve any goal.” He believes that by working under conditions where the team wakes up at seven in the morning for training, the players are capable of battling in every match. Turan also highlighted the resilience of Ukrainians in tough circumstances: “I always talk about Ukrainians—how they endure shelling at night and still continue living their normal lives. So we have no excuses in football.”

Ahead of the crucial match, Turan expressed respect for Crystal Palace manager Glasner, stating: “I have great respect for Glasner and am glad to face him and this challenge.” He underscored the importance of learning in high-level games: “I enjoy learning when I stand before an opponent like Glasner.” Despite the difficulties encountered in the first leg, Shakhtar’s coach shows faith in his team.

Shakhtar’s preparation for the decisive UEFA Europa Conference League semifinal second leg is critical, especially after the first-game loss. The team needs not only tactical adjustments but also moral support to rise to the new challenge. Importantly, Turan focuses on learning and motivating his players, which could be key to achieving a positive outcome in the upcoming match. A strong performance in this game could mark a significant step toward the final and boost the team’s confidence.

As Shakhtar prepares for the challenging return leg against Crystal Palace, it's essential to consider the insights from the opposing coach. Glasner has shared his expectations regarding Shakhtar's technical capabilities, which could provide further context on the upcoming match and the strategies both teams might employ. Understanding these dynamics will be crucial for fans looking to grasp the full picture of this semifinal showdown.
