Seized Vessel Nika Spirit Heads to Auction with a 12 Million UAH Starting Bid

Підводний човен Ніка Спіріт виставлено на аукціон з початковою ставкою 12 мільйонів гривень.

Nika Spirit Vessel Up for Sale

The company 'Alfa Group 77' has announced the sale of the seized vessel Nika Spirit via the Prozorro electronic platform. The auction is scheduled for March 5th and will be conducted as a three-round English auction, with the starting price set above 12 million Ukrainian hryvnias. The Nika Spirit gained notoriety after being detained by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in Izmail in 2019, following its involvement in the blockade of the Kerch Strait in November 2018.

In 2018, the vessel, then named Neyma, participated in the Kerch Strait blockade, an incident that led to the seizure of Ukrainian naval boats and their crews. The arrest of the Nika Spirit marked the first precedent for the detention of Russian-owned property of this class. The vessel retains the permanent IMO number 9146522. It is known that in 2019, the SBU seized the ship in the port of Izmail; earlier, France had released a tanker linked to Russia's shadow fleet. The Marseille Prosecutor's Office also reported a financial penalty imposed on the vessel's owner as part of a plea agreement.

Maritime Navigation Oversight

Notably, the detention of the tanker Grinch occurred in late January this year, when a document check confirmed suspicions regarding the use of a false flag. These events collectively underscore the critical importance of maritime navigation oversight and adherence to international norms.

The auction of the Nika Spirit on Prozorro represents a significant step in combating violations of international maritime law, particularly the illegal use of vessels under false flags. This case also highlights Ukraine's efforts to seek accountability following Russia's aggression in the Kerch Strait, a flashpoint that saw tense clashes between Ukrainian and Russian forces. The ongoing developments surrounding this vessel could influence international responses and cooperation in the realm of maritime security.
