Significant Archaeological Finds in Hungary

During excavations near the historic battlefield of Mezőkeresztes in Hungary, archaeologists uncovered a treasure dating back to the Late Bronze Age. This discovery, consisting of three bronze artifacts, has been dated to approximately the 13th to 11th centuries BCE, making it about 2,500 years older than the famous battle fought between October 22 and 26, 1596. The battle site covers more than 100 square kilometers and was the location of a conflict between the Ottoman Empire and a Christian alliance led by the Habsburg monarchy and the Principality of Transylvania.

The treasure, estimated to be over 3,000 years old, includes a large bronze bowl and two spiral-shaped decorative armlets. Volunteer archaeologist Zoltán Vágó detected a signal indicating buried metal, which led to the careful in situ extraction of the entire hoard for laboratory micro-excavation—a pioneering technique for this region of Borsod County.

Additional Discoveries

Besides the Bronze Age hoard, researchers also uncovered 737 Roman coins across three locations in western Hungary. Most coins date back to the 4th century CE and belong to the era of Constantine’s dynasty. Alongside the coins, the team found various artifacts including:

  • ceramics
  • brooches
  • other objects

These finds were made during ongoing excavations in the northern and central parts of Szomód County, highlighting the area's rich archaeological potential.

Discovering ancient artifacts on lands that witnessed pivotal battles emphasizes Hungary’s deep historical layers. Such research offers valuable insights into the cultural and social dynamics of past societies, as well as the interactions among different civilizations that once influenced this region. Finds like these bronze items and Roman coins are crucial for understanding the complex history shaped by various empires and cultures throughout the centuries.

In addition to the remarkable Bronze Age treasure, ongoing excavations in western Hungary have revealed a significant number of artifacts, including numerous Roman coins from the 4th century. These findings not only enhance our understanding of the region's rich history but also provide a fascinating glimpse into the interactions between various ancient cultures.
