Archaeologists have discovered the remains of the Khadjibey Fortress in Odessa during excavations on Primorsky Boulevard. The rector of the South Ukrainian National Pedagogical University named after Ushinsky, Andrey Krasnozhon, confirmed this news and noted that this fortress has been a subject of discussions about its localization for almost two centuries.
«The Khadjibey Fortress has been found. A point has been established in the discussions about its localization, which lasted almost 200 years,» – he wrote.
According to Krasnozhon, the search was complicated by the lack of reliable data and traces of this defensive structure, which was blown up by Russian troops shortly after the assault of 1789. As a result, excavations began in the summer of 2021, which brought the expected result.
Description of the Remains of the Fortress
As a result of the excavations, archaeologists discovered the frontal wall of the artillery coastal battery that was built onto the fortress from the shore, as well as traces of the dismantling of the curtains. They also recorded destructions and dismantlings in other parts of the structure.
«Especially indicative in this respect is the corner junction of the masonry of two walls of the battery, dismantled to the foundations,» – noted Krasnozhon.
