The War Wolf's Toll: A Medieval Trebuchet Victim Excavated in Scotland
A human fatality from a trebuchet round has been documented for the first time by University of Bradford archaeologists. The remains, labeled Skeleton 150, were discovered beneath the chapel at Stirling Castle in Scotland. Investigators determined the individual was a male between 22 and 34 years old, stood 1.65 meters tall, and perished during the 1304 siege, when Edward I of England assaulted the fortress.
The skeleton bears more than 160 injuries that occurred at the moment of death. His skull split along 61 distinct lines, and roughly 60 cracks affected the ribs. The blow landed on the right shoulder and the back of the skull, leaving those areas the most pulverized. Forensic comparisons point to a single, high-velocity strike on an upright, living person whose arms were raised and bent in front of the body. The analysis employed micro-computed tomography, radiography, and microscopy.

The findings were unveiled at the Paleopathology Association conference in Berlin. Stirling Castle, the final bastion of an independent Scotland, fell to Edward I's forces in 1304. During the siege, Edward deployed no fewer than 17 siege engines, the largest being the "War Wolf," constructed by five carpenters and fifty laborers over three months. These trebuchets were capable of lobbing stones that weighed more than 100 kilograms. A trebuchet, for those unfamiliar, is a counterweight-powered catapult used in medieval warfare to hurl heavy missiles over defensive walls.
Buckberry acknowledges that very few comparable cases have been recorded, so some uncertainty persists. Lukas Waltenberger, an osteologist at Vilnius University, described the conclusions as compelling in remarks to Science magazine.
