Ukraine Braces for Arctic Blast, Temperatures Could Plummet to -30°C

Україна готується до надзвичайно холодної погоди, очікується різке зниження температури до -30°C.

Forecaster Warns of Extreme Cold and Red Alert Conditions

A meteorologist from the Ukrhydrometcentre, Ivan Semylyt, has issued a warning of an extreme cold snap set to begin in Ukraine on February 2nd. Nighttime temperatures are forecast to drop to -20...-25°C in places, with daytime highs of only -13...-18°C. The peak of the freeze is expected on February 3rd and 4th, when overnight lows could reach -21...-27°C, triggering a red-level danger warning. Such severe cold poses significant risks to public health and infrastructure.

On January 31st, Ukraine will be caught between a warm southern cyclone and a cold anticyclone from Finland. From February 2nd, Arctic air will sweep across the entire country, causing a dramatic temperature drop. The most severe conditions are anticipated in the northern, Poltava, and Kharkiv regions, where localized temperatures may plunge to -30°C. This corresponds to a third-level danger warning, signifying an extreme frost emergency.

Expected Thaw and Associated Risks

A relative warming trend is forecast from February 6th to 9th, with temperatures rising by 3-6 degrees, though this period will also bring snowfall. Ivan Semylyt noted that Monday, February 2nd, will see an intensification of the cold, with nighttime lows of -20...-25°C and daytime highs of -13...-18°C.

This forecast indicates serious risks for the population, especially in regions where temperatures may fall to critically low levels. Authorities and rescue services must be prepared for potential emergencies, such as frostbite and power supply issues. The deteriorating weather could also impact transport, the agricultural sector, and other areas of activity in the country. — Ivan Semylyt
