Ukrainian High Jumpers Ready for Summer Campaign

Ukrainian high jump star Yaroslava Mahuchikh will launch her outdoor season on May 31 at the Diamond League meeting in Rabat, the third stop of this year's circuit. Two fellow Ukrainian athletes, Yuliya Levchenko and Iryna Herashchenko, are set to compete earlier on May 23 at the Xiamen leg.

Mahuchikh enters the summer with impressive indoor credentials, having secured four victories during the winter season. She won the 2026 World Indoor Championships with a leap of 2.01 meters and cleared 2.03 meters at the Demyanyuk Memorial—the best performance in the world this season. This will be her third appearance at the Rabat Diamond League, following wins there in 2022 (1.96 meters) and 2023 (2.01 meters). A three-time Diamond League champion and two-time silver medalist in the finals, she finished as the runner-up last season but skipped the Rabat event entirely.

Key Rivals for the Ukrainian Athletes

Yuliya Levchenko last competed in the 2025 Diamond League final and recently cleared two meters for the first time in five years. Iryna Herashchenko returns to competition for the first time since 2024, having missed the previous season due to pregnancy. Herashchenko and Levchenko will face a strong field in Xiamen, including:

  • Eleanor Patterson (Australia), bronze medalist at the 2024 Olympics
  • Maria Zhodzik (Poland), silver medalist at the 2025 World Championships
  • Imke Onnen (Germany)
  • Morgan Lake (Great Britain)
  • Lamara Distin (Jamaica)
  • Charity Hufnagel (USA)
  • Lu Jiawen (China)
  • Shao Yuqi (China)

Following the Xiamen meet, Yaroslava Mahuchikh plans to compete at Continental Tour events in the Netherlands and Croatia on June 21 and June 24, respectively.

The upcoming outdoor season promises to be packed for Ukraine's high jumpers, particularly Mahuchikh, who boasts a strong track record at Diamond League events. The Xiamen competition also marks a significant step for Levchenko and Herashchenko as they return to active competition. Their performances in these early meets could shape their momentum heading into the subsequent Continental Tour stops.

As the outdoor season unfolds, the spotlight will also be on fellow Ukrainian high jumpers, Levchenko and Herashchenko, who are gearing up for their own competitions at the Diamond League meet in China. Their performances will be crucial as they aim to establish their presence on the international stage, adding excitement to an already thrilling summer for Ukrainian athletics.
