Mahuchikh Triumphs in Zagreb

Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh secured first place at the Continental Tour event (the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial) in Zagreb by clearing 1.97 meters. She also attempted 2.01 meters but failed to clear it in three tries. Australia's Eleanor Patterson and Serbia's Angelina Topic tied for second place, both achieving 1.95 meters. Another Ukrainian competitor, Iryna Gerashchenko, finished ninth with a jump of 1.85 meters.

Both Mahuchikh and Patterson opted to skip the first three heights, starting their jumps at 1.90 meters—a height they both cleared on their first attempts. Patterson, Topic, Fatoumata Balley, and Marija Vukovic all successfully cleared the next height of 1.93 meters. Mahuchikh passed on that height but then was the only athlete to clear 1.95 meters on her first try. At 1.97 meters, Topic passed her attempt, while Patterson could not make the height. Mahuchikh, however, succeeded on her third attempt.

After her win, Mahuchikh said: 'I jumped 1.97 meters. I think it was a good attempt. I know I can jump higher. This is a very nice competition. I hope to come back here next year.'

She also noted that competitions held outside of stadiums always feel different and that seeing so many Ukrainians in the crowd was very pleasant and heartwarming.
