ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih to Undergo Two-Month Cold Shutdown Following Four Russian Missile Strikes

Після чотирьох російських ракетних ударів, АрселорМіттал Кривий Ріг переходить на два місяці вимушеного простою.

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih Initiates Extended Cold Shutdown

ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih is preparing for a two-month cold shutdown of its operations after enduring four missile attacks by Russian forces. These strikes have tragically claimed the lives of six employees and injured more than 18 others, while forcing a halt to the plant's primary steel production. The shutdown aims to protect both the workforce and industrial assets, preserving them for a potential restart once hostilities cease.

Impact of the Missile Strikes

The steel plant has been targeted in four devastating missile attacks, including a nighttime strike on September 12. This particular assault resulted in the deaths of two contractors and injuries to two company employees. Overall, the attacks have led to six fatalities and over 18 injuries among staff, according to company reports.

Over the next two months, the company will carefully implement the cold shutdown process, which involves safely halting production and placing industrial assets into preservation mode. This strategic pause is essential for managing risks and safeguarding the facility during ongoing conflict.

"A cold shutdown is more than just stopping production. It’s a critical measure to ensure business continuity and risk management at every asset. Our top priority is to protect our people and infrastructure so we can resume operations at the earliest safe opportunity." Mauro Longobardo, CEO of ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih

As of late September, the company states that it cannot safely or reliably restart the plant due to the sustained missile attacks. Mauro Longobardo emphasized that once the war concludes and conditions allow, ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih will engage with the Ukrainian government to reassess the feasibility of resuming production securely and sustainably.

This planned cold shutdown represents a crucial step to protect employee lives and prevent further damage amid the ongoing conflict. It also highlights the necessity for businesses to adapt to the challenges posed by the war and demonstrates the company’s commitment to eventual recovery. Given the current circumstances, ensuring safety and planning for future operations remain top priorities in the coming months.

The recent missile attacks have not only led to a tragic loss of life but also forced the steel plant to halt its operations.
