Perry's Former Assistant Receives Prison Sentence

A court has handed down a prison term to Kenneth Iwamasa, the former personal assistant of actor Matthew Perry, in connection with the star's death. Despite lacking any medical training, Iwamasa repeatedly injected Perry with ketamine. On the day of Perry’s death—October 28, 2023—he administered at least three injections. In the days leading up to the tragedy, Iwamasa had given Perry no fewer than 27 shots. The actor’s cause of death was determined to be acute ketamine overdose, and his body was discovered in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home.

Iwamasa is the last of five individuals charged in this case to be sentenced. He pleaded guilty in full and agreed to cooperate with investigators. The judge sentenced him to three and a half years in prison. Another defendant, Jasveen Sangha, received a 15-year prison term. Known in Hollywood as the “Ketamine Queen,” Sangha is believed by authorities to have supplied the lethal drug.

A Long Struggle with Addiction

For years, Matthew Perry battled addiction to alcohol and narcotics. His struggles began in the late 1990s after a jet ski accident, which led to a prescription for painkillers. He developed an opioid dependency and spent millions of dollars trying to manage his condition. The actor also underwent surgery for a ruptured intestine—a complication caused by his substance abuse. In 2022, Perry released a memoir detailing his hardships and his fight against addiction.

The death of Matthew Perry—a beloved actor and comedian—sent shockwaves through the entertainment world and beyond, drawing intense media and public scrutiny. The sentences handed down to Iwamasa and the other defendants underscore the grave dangers of drug abuse and the critical need for medical oversight in cases involving powerful substances. This case may serve as a pivotal moment in the broader conversation about accountability for drug-related harm, particularly within the entertainment industry.
