On May 28 at 23:00, astronomers observed that asteroid 2022 OB5 completes a full rotation on its axis in just 92 seconds, classifying it as an ultra-fast rotator. The centrifugal force at its equator is 100 times stronger than its own gravity. These extreme characteristics present fresh obstacles for scientists and engineers studying the object and considering potential future missions.

Astroforge, the company behind the planned DeepSpace-2 mission, intends to investigate asteroid 2022 OB5. However, after losing its Odin probe shortly after launch last year, the firm now faces significant technical hurdles. Astroforge CEO Matt Jalic insists that

“everything is under control,”
but the rapid rotation of the target demands careful analysis and strategic planning.

Obstacles in Asteroid Research

Researcher Miguel Alarcon, who studied 2022 OB5, emphasizes that

“startups see asteroids as easy targets because they are cheap to reach. But they rarely think about how to operate there. Measuring the orbit is only half the battle. You need to understand how the object rotates, what its surface is like, and whether a spacecraft can even anchor itself.”
His remarks highlight the complex, multi-layered challenges facing researchers.

Against a backdrop of both successes and failures in the space industry, it is worth noting that other companies—such as Planetary Resources and Deep Space Industries—have already gone bankrupt. This adds further difficulty for newcomers like Astroforge. All these factors underscore that asteroid exploration, particularly of 2022 OB5, remains a demanding yet captivating field for research and development.
