Astrophotographers have revealed striking details of the blast and the comet's incredible glow in Namibia's night sky.
On 13 August 2023 at 16:00, it was reported that astrophotographers Gerald Rhemann and Michael Jäger captured a detailed image of comet 220P/McNaught as it flared up over Namibia. Discovered by Australian astronomer Robert McNaught, this comet circles the Sun once every 5.5 years.
Surge in Activity
The comet reached perihelion in June 2023, when a massive release of gas and dust made it 8,000 times brighter. Then in August, another outburst pushed it to 600 times its normal brightness. The image, taken through a 12-inch astrograph telescope with a ZWO ASI 6200 MM Pro camera, shows a vivid green coma and the comet's tail.
This rare observed phenomenon has drawn attention from astronomers and researchers, who are continuing to monitor 220P/McNaught's behavior.
