Astronomers Discover a Mega-Earth That Defies Planet Formation Rules

Discovery of a Giant 'Mega-Earth'

Astronomers have discovered the exoplanet GJ 523b, which is approximately 23.5 times heavier than Earth and 2.55 times larger, yet remains predominantly rocky. This planet is located in a different planetary system and completes a full orbit around its star in about 17.75 days. Despite its significant mass, GJ 523b does not have a large gaseous envelope, making it unique among known exoplanets.

The main part of GJ 523b's mass consists of rock and metal. At the same time, its mass exceeds the threshold after which planets can begin to accumulate hydrogen and helium and become gas giants. For example, the cores of Jupiter and Saturn reached a mass approximately 20 times greater than Earth's, after which they began to rapidly attract gas. The discovery of GJ 523b puts into question traditional ideas about planet formation, as at such a mass it could have become a gas giant.

Hypotheses Regarding the Formation of GJ 523b

Scientists have proposed two main hypotheses regarding possible reasons why GJ 523b remained rocky:

  • The first explanation concerns the fact that the exoplanet may have initially had a thick atmosphere but subsequently lost a significant portion due to the radiation from a young, active star.
  • The second explanation suggests that a powerful collision with another planet may have stripped GJ 523b of much of its gaseous envelope.

However, none of the theories regarding the loss of GJ 523b's atmosphere has been definitively confirmed at this time.

GJ 523b belongs to a rare group of extremely massive rocky planets that are sometimes referred to as 'mega-Earths.' There is currently no official definition for this class of planets. The discovery of GJ 523b may significantly alter our understanding of planet formation and evolution in the universe.

The discovery of GJ 523b is an important step in understanding the diversity of exoplanets and the processes that influence their formation. Given that astronomers continue to study other systems similar to ours, this could lead to new discoveries regarding the conditions that promote planet formation, as well as improvements in planetary evolution models.
