Artificial Intelligence Drives Creation of the Sharpest Video Yet of a Black Hole Jet

An international team of astronomers has combined 27 years of radio observations with artificial intelligence to produce the most detailed video ever of the jet emitted by the supermassive black hole 3C 345. Their findings, published on September 10 in the journal Nature, focus on the blazar 3C 345 located in the Hercules constellation.

Advanced Techniques and Key Discoveries

The researchers utilized data from 10 VLBA radio telescopes, compiling 116 individual images. To enhance the resolution and track the plasma flows within the black hole’s jet, they applied the neural network Kine. This AI approach boosted the video’s clarity to a level four times higher than that of the original snapshots.

Observations revealed that bright features within the jet move at apparent speeds 10 to 13 times faster than light, while the surrounding gas travels at speeds 9 to 12 times light speed. These superluminal motions challenge conventional shock wave theories, as the luminous clumps outpace the background gas.

The phenomenon is explained by relativistic effects and optical illusions, stemming from the jet’s orientation being closely aligned with the observer’s line of sight. The team intends to apply the Kine neural network to study other cosmic jets, opening new avenues for understanding black holes and their impact on their surroundings.

This work highlights the transformative role of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence in astronomy. By leveraging neural networks, scientists can extract unprecedented details about extreme cosmic events that were previously inaccessible due to the limitations of traditional observation methods.
