Drone Strike on Yandex Data Center in Vladimir Sparks Fire and Power Outage Affecting 5,000 Residents

Атака дронів на центр обробки даних Яндекса у Володимирі призвела до пожежі та знеструмлення для тисяч місцевих жителів.

Drone Assault Disrupts Yandex Data Center in Vladimir

In the early hours of October 11, a drone attack targeted the Yandex data center located in the city of Vladimir, Russia. The assault forced a complete shutdown of the facility, causing interruptions to several Yandex services including Yandex Home, Yandex Music, and Telemist. Governor of Vladimir Oblast, Alexander Avdeyev, confirmed the incident and reported that the attack ignited a fire in the outskirts of Vladimir.

The strike also led to a power outage affecting approximately 5,000 local residents after two electrical substations were disabled. Avdeyev assured that power restoration efforts are underway via backup systems once the area is secured. Evacuations were carried out for residents living closest to the impacted site. Fortunately, no residential buildings were damaged and no injuries have been reported so far.

Official Statements and Impact on Services

Yandex Cloud Alerts and the OSINT channel Exilenova+ issued warnings regarding the attack, describing the remaining infrastructure as unstable. They characterized the platform’s condition as critical and advised users to activate alternative disaster recovery plans. Communication with technical support may be unreliable during this period. Yandex’s team is actively assessing the damage and planning recovery strategies.

This event marks the third recent drone strike on Russian data centers within a short span. Earlier incidents include an attack on the Sasta factory in Ryazan Oblast on October 8 and another on Yandex’s data center in Kaluga on October 9. Additionally, on September 26, drone attacks in Kyiv, Ukraine, disrupted Cosmonova’s data center, leading to media service interruptions.

These successive attacks highlight escalating regional tensions and growing vulnerabilities in critical infrastructure. Frequent assaults of this nature threaten the operational stability of technology companies and the users who rely on their services. Given this evolving situation, monitoring government and corporate responses remains essential for understanding future impacts on digital infrastructure.

The recent drone attack on the Yandex data center in Vladimir is part of a troubling trend of escalating assaults on critical infrastructure. This follows a similar incident just days prior, where the Cosmonova data center in Kyiv was also targeted, prompting Ukrainian President Zelensky to pledge enhanced security measures for vital systems.
