Strikes on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
Russian forces targeted a DTEK energy facility in the Dnipropetrovsk region, cutting off electricity to 39 populated areas. Emergency repair crews quickly mobilized and have already restored power to 19 of those communities. This attack is part of an ongoing campaign of strikes against Ukraine's energy grid, which continues to cause severe damage across the country.
On the evening of May 14, Russian troops also struck energy infrastructure in the Odesa region. Drones damaged a power facility in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district. These incidents underscore the critical state of Ukraine's energy sector, which requires urgent restoration efforts.
Financial Support for Energy Sector Recovery
The Cabinet of Ministers has allocated 12.85 billion hryvnias to protect 209 critical infrastructure sites in frontline regions and the Kyiv area. Over the next decade, Ukraine's total need for energy sector restoration and modernization is estimated at $90.6 billion—34% higher than the previous damage assessment. While the situation remains difficult, energy workers are doing everything possible to bring electricity back to all homes as quickly as possible.
These attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure highlight Russia's continued military aggression, aimed not only at destroying physical assets but also at creating social and economic hardship for civilians. Restoring the power system is a top priority for Ukrainian authorities, as reflected in the significant financial resources allocated to protect critical infrastructure.
