Drone Attacks Inside Russia

In April 2024, a series of drone attacks struck facilities across multiple regions of Russia. These incidents are part of a broader pattern of strikes on Russian territory since the onset of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The targeted sites included:

  • military airfields
  • industrial plants
  • oil refineries

The attacks resulted in at least one fatality.

Attack Timeline

An assault on the night of April 9 targeted the Krasnodar region, near the town of Krymsk, home to a military airfield. Witnesses reported at least 20 explosions over an hour. Debris from downed drones fell on a local enterprise, in fields, and in the village of Moldavanskoye, located 6 km from Krymsk. In the settlement of Sauk-Dere, a residential building was damaged, killing a local resident.

Earlier, on the night of April 4, several attacks occurred in the Samara region, primarily targeting major industrial facilities in the city of Tolyatti. A fire broke out at the 'Togliattikauchuk' chemical plant, and the 'KuibyshevAzot' enterprise was also struck.

Separate attacks were recorded in the Republic of Bashkortostan. On the morning of April 2, drones hit the 'Bashneft-UNPZ' oil refinery, a key asset of the 'Bashneft' company, part of the state-owned 'Rosneft'. The plant processes a mix of West Siberian and local Bashkir oil.

Prior to these events, on the night of March 27, strikes hit the strategic oil terminal port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad region. A series of explosions triggered a major fire at the port. An attack was also noted in this region on the night of March 25.

Governor Veniamin Kondratyev commented on the incidents, noting that falling debris caused damage to local residents and infrastructure. These events have raised public concern over safety and stability in the affected regions.

The wave of drone attacks on Russian facilities highlights escalating regional tensions and potential threats to national security.

Strikes on strategic assets like military airfields and industrial enterprises could have serious consequences for the country's economy and defense capabilities. The response from local authorities and the public reflects growing anxiety and a perceived need for heightened security measures in vulnerable regions.

The recent drone strikes have not only targeted strategic facilities but have also led to significant explosions in various cities.
