Strategic Sites in Three Russian Regions Hit by Drone Strikes

Дронові удари завдали шкоди ключовим об'єктам у трьох російських областях.

Drone Attacks Target Russian Federation

A series of drone attacks struck strategic sites within three regions of the Russian Federation in February 2024. These incidents highlight the vulnerability of military infrastructure far from the front lines of the ongoing conflict. Specifically, a mass drone assault occurred in the Saratov region on the night of February 23, commencing around 02:30 local time. Powerful explosions were heard in the cities of Saratov and Engels, where between 12 and 15 loud blasts were recorded. It is notable that Engels is home to a strategic aviation base for the Russian Air Force.

In neighboring Ulyanovsk, authorities enacted the "Carpet" security plan in response to the attacks, and Ulyanovsk Airport temporarily suspended operations. Furthermore, on the night of February 22, a series of powerful explosions occurred in Saratov and Engels, with the greatest activity observed in the southern part of the region.

Incidents at Military Facilities

In a separate incident on February 12, a military facility in the settlement of Kotluban, Volgograd region, was attacked. This site houses an arsenal for the Main Rocket and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry. A series of powerful explosions there led to a major fire. The governor of Volgograd region, Andrey Bocharov, confirmed the attack and fire, attributing it to falling debris.

On the same day, explosions rocked the Progress plant in the city of Michurinsk, Tambov region, a strategic defense enterprise. These events underscore the growing threats to critical infrastructure deep inside Russia. The increasing frequency of such strikes points to a significant escalation in the conflict's reach, challenging Russia's domestic security posture and potentially forcing a reassessment of its military strategy in the face of these long-range threats. Analysts suggest this drone activity may be part of a broader strategy aimed at degrading an adversary's military capabilities.
