Drone Strikes Halt Oil Exports at Russia's Tuapse Refinery

Безперервні атаки дронів призвели до зупинки експорту нафти з нафтопереробного заводу у Туапсе, Росія.

Tuapse Oil Refinery Operations Grind to a Halt

Following a series of drone attacks on port infrastructure on April 16 and 20, the Tuapse oil refinery has nearly completely ceased operations. Damage to transport hubs in the port of Tuapse and fires at oil product storage facilities have paralyzed export capabilities. The resulting blazes made it impossible to load products onto tankers.

With an annual capacity of about 12 million tons of crude oil—roughly 240,000 barrels per day—the Tuapse refinery specializes in producing:

  • diesel fuel,
  • fuel oil,
  • vacuum gasoil,
  • and other petroleum products.

The vast majority of these goods are destined for international markets. In April, Russia sharply cut its crude oil output due to the attacks, losing hundreds of thousands of barrels daily.

Port of Tuapse Area Developments

In the vicinity of the Tuapse port, maritime traffic has intensified: at least one oil tanker arrived and anchored near the coast, while another tanker departed the port during the day. Smoke from the fires in Tuapse stretched across 300 kilometers, underscoring the severity of the situation.

The situation in Tuapse carries major consequences for Russia's oil industry, as this plant plays a pivotal role in ensuring external supply chains.

The refinery's shutdown could impact the global oil market, as reduced production and exports are likely to drive up petroleum product prices. Moreover, infrastructure damage may require a lengthy recovery period, further straining energy resources in the region.

The recent incidents in Tuapse have not only halted oil exports but also raised safety concerns in the region. Following the drone strikes, a significant fire erupted at the oil hub, resulting in casualties and further complicating the situation.
