Winter Storm Paralyzes U.S. East: Millions Lose Power, Thousands of Flights Canceled Amid Plane Crash

Зимовий буревій охопив схід США: мільйони залишилися без електрики, тисячі рейсів скасовано через аварію літаків.

Private Jet Crashes in Maine

A Bombardier Challenger 650 business jet crashed on January 25 at approximately 7:45 PM local time while taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine. All eight people on board were killed in the accident. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

This tragedy occurred as a severe winter storm swept across the eastern and southern United States. The powerful system caused massive power outages, leaving over one million customers without electricity. The most severe disruptions to the power grid were reported in the following states:

  • Tennessee
  • Mississippi
  • Louisiana
  • Texas

In Tennessee alone, more than 330,000 households lost power.

Aviation System Brought to a Halt by Storm

The severe weather has also crippled air travel, leading to the cancellation of more than 10,800 flights in a single week. Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport suspended all operations, while airports in New York and Philadelphia canceled over 80% of scheduled flights. Heavy snowfall is forecast to continue at least through Monday morning, with parts of New England expecting accumulations of up to 45 centimeters (18 inches).

Further complicating the aviation situation, a UPS McDonnell Douglas MD-11 cargo plane crashed near Louisville International Airport in Kentucky. These winter storms are a recurring challenge for U.S. infrastructure, often testing the resilience of power grids and transport networks. The ongoing winter storm continues to disrupt the lives of millions nationwide, damaging infrastructure and causing major transportation delays.

Investigations into the crash and the storm's full impact may take considerable time. However, it is already clear that the severe weather has significantly strained U.S. transportation infrastructure, jeopardizing the safety of passengers and cargo. It is important to monitor further news regarding the restoration of air travel and power supplies in the affected regions.
