Accident in Lisbon: the death toll has risen to 17, among the deceased – citizens of 11 countries

The number of victims of the accident on the popular funicular Elevador da Glória in Lisbon has risen to 17 individuals. Among the deceased are seven men and eight women.


The accident occurred when the funicular car, descending from the viewpoint of São Pedro de Alcântara towards the Restauradores square, lost control, derailed, and crashed into a building. It is preliminarily believed that the cause of the disaster was a cable break, and the failure of the emergency brakes exacerbated the consequences.


As a result of the accident, another 20 people were injured. Among the injured are citizens of various countries, including Portugal, Germany, Spain, South Korea, Cape Verde, Canada, Italy, France, Switzerland, and Morocco.


Emergency services are operating at the scene, and the police are investigating the incident for possible criminal circumstances. The Mayor of Lisbon expressed condolences to the families of the deceased, while the President and Prime Minister expressed support to all victims.


The tragedy on the funicular in Lisbon has caused sorrow for the entire city and the country as a whole, highlighting the need to ensure safety in public transport and drawing attention to maintenance standards in similar places.
