Russia's Diplomats Kicked Out of Austria
Vienna has declared three members of Russia's diplomatic corps persona non grata. The move came after surveillance gear was discovered on the rooftops of Russian diplomatic facilities, used for technical intelligence gathering. The equipment included a forest of antennas forming a network of communications and electronic intelligence tools capable of intercepting mobile phone signals and digital data in Vienna's government district.
On May 4, 2026, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger announced the expulsion of the three Russians. She stressed that
“it is unacceptable for diplomatic immunity to be used for espionage”and emphasized that the expelled diplomats' activities were deemed incompatible with their diplomatic status, adding that they have already left the country.
Growing Tensions in Austria-Russia Relations
This incident is not an isolated one. Since 2020, Austria has already expelled 14 Russian diplomats over suspected intelligence activities.
