The FLAPTrack Solar System

Engineers at the Institute of Electrical Measurement and Sensor Technology at Graz University of Technology have created a novel solar system called FLAPTrack, capable of tracking the sun along two axes. A working prototype with a capacity of 1.8 kWp is currently operating on the roof of an office building at the Infeldgasse campus in Graz. The system continuously adjusts its panels both horizontally and vertically to stay aligned with the sun, maximizing energy capture throughout the day.
FLAPTrack offers substantial advantages in electricity generation:
- During morning and evening hours, when overall electricity demand is at its peak, this system produces more than double the electricity of conventional photovoltaic systems.
- On average, FLAPTrack panels generate nearly 40% more energy than stationary modules.
- On favorable days, energy gains can reach up to 56%.
These benefits make the system particularly effective during winter and in high-latitude regions, where solar angles are lower and sunlight is less direct.
Safety and System Efficiency
Additionally, FLAPTrack features a patented linear drive mechanism responsible for rotating and folding the panels. During storms, hail, or heavy snowfall, the panels fold face-to-face and lower to the ground, reducing the risk of damage. The system receives weather alerts from local meteorological stations and regional forecasting models, ensuring both safety and optimal performance.
