Rising Tensions Between Azerbaijan and Russia

Azerbaijan has formally accused Russia of carrying out attacks against its diplomatic facilities in Kyiv. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, President Ilham Aliyev revealed that the Azerbaijani embassy in the Ukrainian capital has been struck three times since the start of the full-scale invasion. Following the first incident, Azerbaijan provided Russia with the coordinates of its diplomatic sites, yet two further attacks occurred afterward.

In response to these events, Azerbaijan issued diplomatic notes and summoned the Russian ambassador. The Russian Foreign Ministry has rejected the accusations, attributing the strikes to Ukrainian air defense systems. A notable official response from Moscow expressed 'perplexity' over the allegations.

Ukraine and Azerbaijan Forge Cooperation

Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a meeting with Ilham Aliyev, where discussions focused on energy support. Azerbaijan has provided Ukraine with an aid package containing:

  • Generators
  • Transformers

Volodymyr Zelenskyy also addressed the 62nd Munich Security Conference, where critical global security issues, including regional stability, were a central topic.

This situation underscores the growing strain between Azerbaijan and Russia against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine. Attacks on diplomatic compounds are a serious breach of international norms and could significantly impact bilateral relations. The incident is particularly sensitive given Azerbaijan's historical ties to Moscow. Meanwhile, the emerging energy partnership between Ukraine and Azerbaijan highlights how the conflict is reshaping alliances and fostering new strategic connections in the region.
