Weather Conditions in Ukraine
A powerful Asian anticyclone has plunged Ukraine into a severe cold spell, with temperatures forecast to drop as low as -22 degrees Celsius in some areas. This weather system is expected to dominate the region for the coming days, with the freezing conditions predicted to persist through the end of January. Such persistent high-pressure systems from Asia are a known driver of extreme winter weather in Eastern Europe.
Nighttime temperatures will fall to between -10 and -16 degrees Celsius, potentially reaching -15 to -22 degrees in the country's north. During the day, temperatures are expected to range from -9 to -15 degrees, while the Zakarpattia region and the far south will see slightly milder conditions, from -2 to -5 degrees. In Kyiv, overnight lows will plummet to -15 to -18 degrees, with daytime highs of only -10 to -12 degrees.
Forecast and Expected Precipitation
Significant precipitation is not expected across most of Ukraine, with the exception of Crimea, where snow is possible on January 17-18. According to meteorologist Natalka Didenko,
"The Asian anticyclone is very powerful, and its baric branches are reaching even the territory of Ukraine."She also confirmed that the frosty weather in Ukraine will continue, aligning with forecasts through the month's end.
The intense cold brought by the Asian anticyclone is likely to impact daily life for Ukrainians, affecting energy consumption and transportation. Due to the low temperatures, caution is advised, especially in northern regions where the frost may reach critical levels. Meteorological forecasts indicate the situation will remain unchanged until late January, so residents should prepare for a prolonged period of severe cold.
