Groundhog Timko IV's Forecast
On February 2, 2026, Groundhog Timko IV at the Karazin Kharkiv National University's biostation saw his shadow. According to tradition, this means spring will arrive in six weeks. This day, when groundhogs predict the weather, is celebrated in Ukraine and around the world as Groundhog Day. The tradition is similar to the famous Punxsutawney Phil ceremony in the United States.
Timko IV is the brother of Timko III, who retired this year. A colony of 19 groundhogs lives on the biostation's territory, with the population remaining stable at around 20 individuals. The groundhogs at the biological station live for over 25 years, indicating excellent care and living conditions. Professor Viktor Tokarskyi initiated the tradition of celebrating Groundhog Day at the biostation in Haidary in 2004. Since the tradition began, three different groundhogs have made the annual spring forecast.
Traditions and Significance
Volodymyr Hrubnyk confirmed that in 2026, the groundhog saw his shadow, hinting at six more weeks of winter. Conversely, if the groundhog emerges and does not see his shadow, a warm and early spring is expected.
Timko IV's prediction of a delayed spring is part of a tradition that serves not only as entertainment but also draws attention to natural cycles and weather patterns. Groundhog Day has become a symbol of winter's end and the hope of spring for many people, while also promoting interest in natural science among youth. Participation in such events helps foster greater environmental awareness in society.
