Ukraine's Basketball Federation Pursues American Player for National Team

Федерація баскетболу України намагається залучити американського спортсмена до складу національної команди.

Efforts to Naturalize an American Player for Ukraine

The Secretary General of the Ukrainian Basketball Federation, Volodymyr Drabikovsky, has detailed the ongoing process to secure an American player for the national team. The Federation is currently working to obtain a player who is presently competing in Israel. Drabikovsky explained that the situation has been complicated by the war in the Persian Gulf, which suspended the Israeli league and prompted the player to return to the United States.

'We are constantly working on the naturalization of a foreign player, but it's not easy to do during wartime. We have an understanding with the state leadership and were very close to finalizing it. The American player we are counting on is currently playing in Israel. He needed to come to Ukraine to submit the documents.' Volodymyr Drabikovsky

The Federation had arranged for the player to travel to Uzhhorod via Budapest, where he was expected. 'We agreed on Uzhhorod; he was already awaited there. We had a detailed travel plan to Budapest, a meeting schedule, as he needed about a day and a half to sort out his affairs. But it didn't work out. And now, with the start of the war in the Persian Gulf, the championship was suspended, and he went to the US and was out of contact for several weeks,' Drabikovsky noted.

Player Prospects and Team Schedule

Despite these hurdles, the Federation hopes the player will be available to represent Ukraine in July. The national team has crucial qualifying matches scheduled for that month:

  • July 2nd against Georgia
  • July 5th against Denmark

Ukraine has already played several matches in the qualification campaign for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. In the third qualifying round, Ukraine lost to Spain with a score of 78:64. In the second round, the Ukrainian team secured a victory over Denmark (88:71), and in the first qualifying match, they defeated Georgia.

Securing a naturalized player could be a significant boost for the team's performance in these upcoming fixtures. Success in the qualifiers would greatly enhance Ukraine's chances of reaching the World Cup, an achievement with both sporting and symbolic importance for the nation.
