Bayraktar TB2 Strike Drone Successfully Tested with FPV Kamikaze Drones

Turkish defense firm Baykar recently showcased a successful test of its Bayraktar TB2 strike drone, which deployed two FPV kamikaze drones that struck ground targets. The trials took place at a testing range near Keshan in northwestern Turkey. Mounted beneath the TB2’s wings were 16 Skydagger FPV drones, split evenly with 8 on each side. Operators controlled these FPV drones through the communication link of the TB2 itself.

Baykar has not disclosed the exact date of these tests nor the fate of the remaining 14 drones. Under normal conditions, FPV drones like the Skydagger can cover distances of approximately 15 kilometers. However, Haluk Bayraktar noted that

“using the TB2 as a carrier and relay station can dramatically extend the flight range of FPV drones to thousands of kilometers.”

Enhanced Capabilities and Strategic Military Implications

The Bayraktar TB2 earned recognition early in the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine for its role in targeting Russian convoys and typically carries small precision-guided bombs. With this new capacity to deploy and control swarms of FPV drones, Baykar aims to significantly broaden the operational use of these devices in combat scenarios.

These recent tests highlight the expanding importance of unmanned technologies in modern warfare. Employing the TB2 as a platform to launch FPV kamikaze drones could revolutionize battlefield tactics by reducing operator risk and increasing the efficiency of long-range strikes. This development also reflects ongoing technological advancements that are reshaping military strategy and tactics within the region and beyond.
