Belgium’s €10 Million Investment in a Kyiv Burn Treatment Facility
Belgium is providing €10 million to develop a state-of-the-art burn treatment center in Kyiv, aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s capacity to manage severe burn injuries. This initiative is part of a broader program focused on improving burn care services across the country, supported by the Belgian government and the development agency Enabel. Currently, project partners are finalizing the center’s location, operational model, medical staff training requirements, and collaboration framework with Belgian healthcare experts.
The Urgent Need for a Specialized Burn Center
The critical importance of such a facility was tragically highlighted on August 18, when brothers Valeriy and Petro sustained serious burns in a frontline incident caused by a Russian drone strike on their vehicle. Despite his own injuries, Petro managed to rescue Valeriy from the burning car. After initial treatment in Kramatorsk, both were transferred to the Vinnytsia burn center.
Valeriy’s condition was severe, necessitating care at a specialized European center. Thanks to Medevac Ukraine’s medical evacuation network and international partnerships, Valeriy was secured a specialized treatment bed in Europe and was transferred to Belgium five days after his injury. Currently, eight Ukrainian defenders with burn injuries are undergoing treatment in Belgium.
Since its inception, the Medevac Ukraine program has facilitated the treatment and rehabilitation of 7,196 patients across 34 countries, underscoring the vital role of global cooperation in medical support for war victims. Establishing a burn center in Kyiv will significantly improve access to advanced care for Ukrainians affected by burn injuries, marking a crucial advancement in the country’s healthcare infrastructure.
Belgium’s financial commitment not only enhances emergency medical care within Ukraine but also exemplifies the strength of international solidarity in health during wartime. Initiatives like this greatly increase survival and recovery prospects for those wounded in the conflict, demonstrating the global community’s support for Ukraine during these challenging times.
