Ukraine to Receive Advanced F-16 Fighter Jets
Belgium has committed to providing Ukraine with three F-16 fighter jets, enhanced with French electronic warfare technology, following approval from France. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the agreement for these aircraft to be transferred by the end of 2026 and expressed gratitude to the Belgian government for its ongoing support. This transfer requires a formal agreement from France allowing the jets to be handed over to a third party.
Maintenance and Ammunition Support
Deputy Defense Minister of Ukraine, Serhiy Boyev, recently visited Belgium’s Sabena Engineering, the company responsible for servicing the F-16 fleet, and verified that maintenance standards are being properly upheld. Currently, four jets complete servicing each month, with plans to increase this number to six in the near future.
“Claims about maintenance issues involving Sabena Engineering are unfounded and completely false,” stated Theo Francken.
In addition to the fighter jets, Belgium continues to supply ammunition for Ukraine’s F-16s. The country is also providing financial aid amounting to 100 million euros and is preparing for the swift delivery of the aircraft.
“We are confident the transfer will be arranged soon and will begin organizing the logistics immediately afterward,” Theo Francken commented on the prospects of the handover.
This collaboration exemplifies the strengthening of military ties between Belgium and Ukraine, enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities amid ongoing security challenges. The delivery of upgraded F-16s and ammunition represents a critical step in supporting Ukraine’s efforts to safeguard its sovereignty and bolster its armed forces during the current conflict. Furthermore, this initiative reflects the growing commitment of Western allies to assist Ukraine, potentially influencing the strategic dynamics in the region.
As Ukraine prepares to receive the upgraded F-16s, President Zelensky has also outlined plans for long-range operations, establishing a timeline for the delivery of these critical aircraft through 2026.
