Restrictions on Large Buses Implemented in Berford

The town of Berford, nestled in England’s Cotswolds region, is set to introduce new regulations limiting the operation of large tourist coaches. This move comes in response to the rising number of visitors and growing concerns over community safety. Authorities have approved rules capping bus length to a maximum of 12 meters on Priory Lane. Additionally, stopping near the local school during weekdays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM will be prohibited. These measures are scheduled to take effect at 5:00 PM on October 16, 2026, pending any further review.

Andrew Foster, Berford’s Deputy Mayor, emphasized the critical nature of these restrictions for child safety, stating: “The current situation is unacceptable – large buses continue to pose risks to the safety and protection of primary school students and threaten to damage the bollards separating the pavement from the road.”

He added that ensuring the safety of children must take precedence over the convenience of tour companies and their passengers. Exceptions will only be made for buses exceeding 12 meters if special permits are granted, particularly when transport is needed by the school.

The Role of Tourism and Related Developments

While these new bus restrictions aim to protect young students and the town’s infrastructure, local officials acknowledge tourism’s vital contribution to the regional economy. Discussions about tourist bus access were postponed in February 2025, following an initial consultation held in December 2024.

Meanwhile, other significant events are unfolding in the tourism sector:

  • On November 11, 2026, Spain will witness its first nationwide strike in nearly 15 years, sparked by the housing crisis. This one-day strike threatens to disrupt transportation, retail, dining, and museums, with Madrid and Barcelona expected to be most affected.
  • Europe has secured a strong presence in the 2026 global rankings of the top 50 bars, claiming 18 spots in both the top and second tiers. Notable mentions include Moebius Milano in Milan and Line in Athens, while Hong Kong’s Bar Leone topped the list.

Berford’s initiative to limit large tourist buses highlights a growing focus on protecting children and preserving local infrastructure amid increasing visitor numbers. This approach may offer a blueprint for other towns facing similar challenges. At the same time, it is important for travelers and businesses to monitor broader tourism developments across Europe, including the upcoming strike in Spain, which could significantly impact regional travel and tourism activities.
