Free public transport in Kharkiv may remain even after the war ends. However, the final decision will depend on the financial state of the city budget and the community's capabilities. This vision for the future transport system was voiced by the Mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov. This is reported by the publication 'Dumka'.

Terekhov Supports the Idea of Free Transport for Kharkiv Residents

According to the city mayor, the issue of fare payment in the metro and other public transport is closely related to the war situation.

Terekhov emphasized that the Kharkiv metro today performs not only a transport function. During massive Russian attacks, metro stations continue to be used as one of the main shelters for city residents.

That is why, in the mayor's opinion, charging for the use of the metro during wartime is impractical.

What Free Transport After the War Will Depend On

Ihor Terekhov stated that he supports maintaining free transport even after the fighting ends, if the city budget allows financing such a model of transport operation.

«My concept is this: whether the war continues or ends, God willing, if we have the funds to make public transport free, we will provide free transport for Kharkiv residents,» said the mayor.

At the same time, he emphasized that the final decision will depend on the financial capabilities of the city after the war ends and the recovery of the economy.

Kharkiv Remains the Only Large City with Free Transport

Free transport in Kharkiv has been operational since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion. During this time, the city authorities have repeatedly emphasized that this support helps residents move around the city amid constant shelling and a difficult economic situation.

Currently, Kharkiv remains one of the few large Ukrainian cities where passengers can use public transport without paying for the fare.

The future of this benefit will become clearer after the war ends and the financial capabilities of the city budget are assessed.

Earlier, law enforcement in Kharkiv dismantled a scheme for the production and sale of counterfeit household chemicals, which was disguised as products of well-known global brands.
