Third Drone Strike in a Week Targets Major Oil Refinery in Ufa

Третє потужне безпілотне напад за сім днів вразило велике НПЗ в Уфі.

Drone Attack on a Refinery in Bashkortostan

On April 2, the Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim oil refinery in Ufa, Republic of Bashkortostan, was struck by drones. The facility, owned by the state-controlled Rosneft company, processes a mix of West Siberian crude (50%), local Bashkir oil (40%), and gas condensate. A series of explosions in Ufa's northern industrial zone triggered a fire at the refinery complex. In response, local authorities declared an air raid alert and temporarily suspended operations at the city's airport.

A Pattern of Recent Attacks

This incident follows a series of recent drone assaults on other Russian facilities. On the night of March 27, drones targeted the strategic oil export terminal in Ust-Luga, Leningrad Region, causing a fire after multiple explosions. Just two days earlier, on March 25, the Leningrad Region faced a mass drone attack. Regional Governor Alexander Drozdenko claimed that air defense and electronic warfare systems destroyed 33 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The Ust-Luga terminal was also a target in that earlier attack, sustaining a fire from explosions.

Furthermore, on the night of March 11, several Russian regions came under a coordinated drone assault. The most intense strikes were recorded in the Samara Region, where at least 10 explosions were reported over the cities of Samara and Syzran. These events highlight a concerning trend of increased drone activity targeting critical Russian infrastructure. The attacks are part of a broader pattern of strikes on Russia's energy sector, which has become a focal point since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The growing frequency of drone attacks on strategic sites within Russia points to escalating regional tensions and potential threats to the country's energy security. Strikes on refineries and export terminals could have serious economic consequences, potentially disrupting the supply of oil and gas. Monitoring the situation's evolution may reveal new challenges for Russia in the realms of security and defense.

As the situation escalates, the impact of recent drone strikes is becoming increasingly evident. Notably, similar attacks in the Leningrad Region have led to significant disruptions at oil ports and even affected operations at Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg.
